Goal Setting

A teacher sets a goal at the beginning of the year to learn a new, researched method to teach the unit on exponential functions to increase student learning. Upon grading the exit tickets for the lesson, she realized the students did not learn the objective. So, she returns to her previous way of teaching and decides new methods can be a waste of time.

A teacher sets a goal at the beginning of the year to learn a new, researched method to teach the unit on exponential functions to increase student learning. Upon grading the exit tickets for the lesson, she realizes the students did not learn the objective. So she starts making a plan to reteach the next day and uses her resources (colleagues, research, etc.) to better the lesson.

To properly assist a teacher in either of these mindsets, the campus leader needs to serve as an instructional resource for her. The leader would make his or herself available to speak with the teacher about her concerns of the lesson and offer advice and assistance for moving forward. The teacher's willingness to try something new should definitely be recognized. To foster growth, the campus leader should also be open and vulnerable in explaining that they have also experienced failure the first time trying something new, and encourage them that they can succeed at meeting this goal they set.  Specified times will be set to follow up with the teacher to talk about the progress of meeting this goal.
