Pre-Conference

The teacher has a difficult time determining a goal to set for the year because he is a veteran teacher and feels very confident he knows what he is doing in the classroom.

The teacher already knows what goals to set for the year based on his reflections of the previous year. He decides one specific goal will be to speak to every parent by the fourth week of school. He asks his principal and mentor teacher to keep him accountable.

The campus principal should look at the data from the previous year(s) with the teacher with a fixed mindset and ask him to determine a goal based on that information. This would also require the principal to be self-reflective and patient. The principal cannot give up on this teacher because he may seem determined not to change.

For the teacher with the growth mindset, the principal can be that support and follow up with the teacher on completing his goal. The principal can also offer his or her assistance if some parents are difficult to reach.
