The Power of Yet & Goal Setting

As an educator, I make goals every year. Sometimes because I am mandated by Texas Education Agency, but often because I want to. As I've explored my mindset, I have learned that I am more likely to have a fixed mindset towards goals when I am mandated to write them. Specifically when my options are narrow and don't necessarily align with my interests. As this year comes to a close, and I begin to plan for the coming year, I am changing my mindset. I will take the options given to me and find a way to incorporate my interests. I am not talking about personal interests. Interests in this case refer to my desires to see changes in my classroom. These include certain technology I want to apply in my classroom, different strategies for differentiated instruction, as well as tools to communicate with parents more effectively.

Over the course of the summer, I will determine a way to utilize the chrome books to complete most math assignments while still allowing the kids to show all their work.

I will also seek out opportunities to learn more strategies for differentiated instruction in the classroom. I will practice these strategies with my teammates, children, and family members over the summer to learn how to use the strategies effectively.

Lastly, I will speak with other educators of high school to determine their best methods for effectively communicating with parents.

My biggest struggle will be the communication with parents. I have a fixed mindset about high school students and their need to communicate for themselves. I will have to learn a balance of autonomy for the students with what the parents need to know as well.
